This is a roadmap to learning what you need to know as a data scientist in business. It is not a course, but it's your personal learning space. We have laid out a path so you don’t need to start from scratch.

Who is this for?

This roadmap is most suitable if you want to learn data science in order to get hired as a data scientist or analyst, whether you’re just out of college or career-switching.

How to use this template?

Use this template to guide your data science learning journey.

The study info provided in the template is very minimal, but we link to many great resources. Study those resources and write down what you learn in your own words, directly in this template.

Modify this template as you see fit. Delete what doesn’t interest you, and add more where you want to dive deeper.

Finally, deep learning happens through practice and repetition. I recommend you add spaced repetition flashcards to memorize everything you need to know to get an interview, ace the interview, get hired and start your data science career.

Who am I?

My name is Dominic Zijlstra. My own data science journey started four years ago. I was an unhappy electrical engineer in aerospace. I was looking for something less narrow and more challenging, so I self-learned everything I needed to know about data science. This was a long journey with many detours, but eventually I felt confident enough to start applying, and after a few months I was hired as a data scientist in a vibrant fintech startup in London.

It turned out real-world data science is quite different from what I had studied! I learned about databases, data cleaning, software engineering, but what surprised me was how much I was communicating my findings to business stakeholders (good plots are key!). So I was anxious at first and learned slowly. Eventually I got the hang of it and worked for three years with very hands-on business data, providing real value to C-level decision makers.

In parallel, I’m an avid language learner and have developed methods to learn faster and retain more, which I’ve built into Traverse.link.

This roadmap will help you acquire the DS skills companies are looking for.
